Plank Getting Fit for Free

Are you looking to get fitter, but not quite willing to pay huge amounts of money for shiny gyms and crazy classes?  Well, being healthy and fit doesn't have to cost the earth - instead you can use what's around you and still enjoy great results!  Here are a few ideas . . .

Everyday ideas

it's only once you stop and look that you realize just how many exercise opportunities there are around you - walk up escalators instead of standing still, use stairs instead of elevators or get off a few stops early if you're on the bus or subway.  All the little things will eventually add up!  Next time you go to the store, park further away and push or carry your shopping just that little bit further.  All of these ideas work your legs, which is the biggest muscle in our body, so putting them under pressure throughout the day is a good way to burn some energy!

Do it for charity

Instead of spending money, why not raise it instead!  Looking for charity initiatives not only helps you meet new people and help out the needy, but also gives you organized and structured exercise!  All you need to do is show up.  Most events include exercises such as group walks or jogs, and for the more experienced there are plenty of more challenging options.  Have a look around your local area and you'll be sure to find something to get involved in.

Dance it up

As well as improving your fitness, dance can put you in a great mood and lets you listen to great music at the same time.  Even if you are at home, just draw the curtains, put on your favorite tunes and get moving.  For the most effective workout, make sure to include lots of jumping, arm-swinging (watch the shelves!) and hip movements.  If you're not a freestyler, there are all kinds of instructional dance videos out there that double up as fitness routines, so get out there and find your style.

Pressing matters

Press-ups might sound daunting, but you need to start somewhere, right?  Fitness instructors everywhere swear by this simple exercise that helps build muscle and core strength in just a few movements.  When you do a press-up, it's all about the technique - here's what you need to do!

  • Get down on your knees and put your palms on the ground
  • If you're a beginner, stay on your knees, but for the full movement you need to balance yourself with your toes
  • Extend your arms completely when doing the movement but don't lock them
  • Keep your toes at a similar width to that of your hips
  • Make sure your back is straight as you complete the movement

And there you go!  Just a few ideas on how you can get in better shape without paying a penny.  Remember, the world is your gym!
