Sweet slumber

It’s no secret that lack of sleep can impair our decision making and general cognitive ability. If you miss out on essential shut-eye, your ability to focus, learn and retain details will take a hit so make sure you get around 7-8 hours of quality sleep a night. The quality of your sleep can be affected by a number of things such as your diet before bed and how active you are when winding down, so make sure to stay away from sugars, caffeine and bright screens so that your body and mind can relax.

Stay active

We all know that exercise is good for us, but having a good workout can also help activate your mind and help you stay focused. As we exercise we often let our minds drift onto certain subjects which can lead to better recall in the long-term. Mornings are a good time to exercise because it gets our bodies up and moving, which in turn stimulates the brain.

Brain games

Our minds love games! Over the last few years there have been a huge number of ‘brain games’ developed for phones and consoles that can help you keep the grey matter on top form. These games usually consist of brain-teasers, quick-fire maths questions and logic puzzles. Perfect for when you’re on the train or first thing in the morning when you wake up!

Diet

Just like any other organ, what we eat will have an effect on how well our brains function. Omega-3 is a great source of fatty acids which contribute towards brain health and can be found in foods such as beans, oils, nuts, seeds, broccoli and spinach. Make sure you get plenty of fruit and veg as well for their antioxidant and vitamin-rich properties.

Learn something new!

Learning is what our brains do best – from the minute we are born we are discovering new things, committing them to memory and improving. If you find yourself a little bit forgetful, maybe you need some stimulation outside of your normal day to day life. Buy a guitar, try your hand at drawing or even start juggling! Not only will you sharpen your memory but you’ll have a cool new skill to show off too!
