Why you should drink more water!

Drinking Water

We’ve all heard a lot about how important it is to drink lots of water, but how many of us actually know why? Sure, it keeps us hydrated, but what does that actually mean?

It’s always easier to reach for something sweet and sugary, but water has a whole lot going for it! Not only does it sustain all life on the planet (which is a pretty big deal), it’s absolutely essential to our wellbeing. Here’s why…

Fundamentally functional

Our bodies are always working – whether they are busy getting us from A-B, battling an infection or making repairs, water is always going to be a key part of that process. Without water, our bodies would not be able to carry out the millions of functions it does every day, so staying hydrated is kind of important!

Liquids of any kind will always contain some water, but when it is mixed with other substances, such as in juices or hot drinks, you’ll end up getting thirsty again. Certain fruits and vegetables also contain relatively high levels of water, so feel free to tuck into lettuce, cucumber and watermelon!

How much should you drink?

Of course this depends on your overall body mass, but the broad recommendation from experts is that you should drink 6-8 ounces of water a day, using a combination of pure water and other liquids. This might sound like a lot, but if you drink a glass every now and then, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you get near to that target. Everyone’s needs are different, and the amount you drink will depend on your weight, height, activity levels and whether or not you work in a really hot and sweaty place!

So what other benefits are there?

What? You want more? Not a problem, because water is awesome. Here are more reasons why:

  • It helps you feel better and recuperate when you’re ill.
  • You’ll feel better following a night out.
  • It helps you control your calories if you’re looking to slim down.
  • It keeps your skin soft and healthy!
  • Prevents headaches
  • Energizes your muscles and keeps you ready for action!

Ok, so after reading all that you’re probably quite thirsty! Get yourself a glass of nice cold water, drink it down and feel fantastic.
